Poros consists of two islands: Sphairia in the south, which is of volcanic origin and where its major city is located, and Kalaureia, also known as Kalavria or Calauria, the most significant part of the island chain. A bridge connects the two islands over a narrow strait.

The main attractions of the island are the Temple of Poseidon (built circa 520 BC), the Archaeological and Folklore Museums of the Zoodohos, Pigi Monastery, which is one of the most impressive religious monuments on the island, and the Clock Tower, which stands on the hill overlooking the town.
