Metopi
Metopi is a small, uninhabited islet located between the two larger Saronic islands of Aegina and Agistri. Often described as one of the most mysterious and untouched destinations in the Saronic Gulf, Metopi offers visitors a rare chance to experience pristine nature, white sandy beaches, and crystal-clear turquoise waters — far from the crowds of mainstream Greek island tourism.
Location and Geography
Metopi sits 2.5 nautical miles southwest of the port of Aegina and just 1 nautical mile northeast of Cape Agios Georgios in Agistri. The islet is almost flat, surrounded by stunning shallow turquoise waters that create two natural channels: the deeper Aegina-Metopi channel and the shallower Agistri-Metopi channel. From above, Metopi famously resembles the shape of a sword.
A Mysterious Hidden Wonder
Metopi is known for its mysterious "red lake" — a small saltwater pond at one end of the island where unusual conditions create an otherworldly, almost Martian-like appearance. The islet was famously called the "propylaea of Agistri" by the Greek poet Kostas Varnalis, and it's a known stopover for the sea turtles of the Saronic Gulf, the same turtles depicted on the ancient coins of Aegina — among the first coins ever minted in ancient Greece.
What to See on Metopi
The Pristine White Sand Beach – On the southeastern side of Metopi, a small but stunning beach with white sand and shallow turquoise waters awaits. It's one of the most beautiful and untouched beaches in the entire Saronic Gulf.
The Chapel of Agion Theodoron – The only structure on the island, this small country chapel is dedicated to the Saints Theodore.
Vineyards – Metopi was historically used as Agistri's vineyard, and a few vineyards still exist on the islet today.
Sea Turtles – The waters around Metopi are a known habitat for sea turtles, making it a favorite for marine life lovers.
